Cracker Barrel’s Logo Change Sparks MAGA Backlash, Stock Drop, and Rivalry Drama

For the first time in nearly 50 years, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store has redesigned its iconic logo—removing the image of the old man leaning on a barrel and opting for a cleaner, more minimalist look. While the chain insists this is part of a broader modernization plan, the move has set off a storm of criticism, especially among conservative voices.

MAGA Outrage: “Woke Cracker Barrel”

Donald Trump Jr. blasted the redesign on X with a blunt “WTF is wrong with @CrackerBarrel??!” Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, once a Cracker Barrel employee, joined the chorus, accusing the company of going “woke” and even dragging religion into the debate. For critics, the new look represents an erasure of heritage and tradition.

Wall Street Feels the Heat

The backlash quickly spilled into the markets. Cracker Barrel shares tumbled as much as –13% intraday, before closing down about –7%, with trading volume spiking fourfold. Analysts suggest the sell-off had more to do with social media frenzy than business fundamentals, noting: “People come for the food, not the logo.”

Competitors Jump In

Adding fuel to the fire, Steak ’n Shake took a jab on social media, claiming Cracker Barrel was abandoning its roots: “Heritage is what got Cracker Barrel this far.” The rivalry gave the controversy another viral push.

Cracker Barrel Responds

CEO Julie Felss Masino defended the change, emphasizing that the company’s values and spirit remain untouched. The redesign, she said, is actually a nod to the brand’s early history while adapting the logo for a digital-first world.

Why It Matters

Founded in 1969, Cracker Barrel has built its identity on Southern cooking and rustic nostalgia. Its old-timer logo, introduced in 1977, had become a cultural symbol. Changing it now signals a balancing act between honoring tradition and appealing to modern diners—a move that clearly divides opinion.
